Sightseeing and traveling

After our plane arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa, we were met by businessman Mr. Neels, who deposited us at this guesthouse for the day.

We were served some traditional rooibos tea, which we came to enjoy last year.

The next day, Mr. Neels' son and wife took us sightseeing. First we visited the Union Buildings, government offices in South Africa.

The Union Buildings behind us.
Flowers at the guesthouse we stayed for two nights.
Another exotic plant.
Sorry, these pictures are a bit mixed up. This is seen from the grounds of the Union Buildings.
A statue of Nelson Mandela.
The Voortrekker monument, built in honor of Dutch pioneers who migrated by covered wagon from Cape Town inland, encountering hostile tribes and winning incredible victories.

Inside the building was a museum. This is one of a series of needlework pictures depicting the journey of the voortrekkers.
We climbed a lot of steps to the top, where we could look down and see the marble block commemorating the battle of Blood River, which the voortrekkers won against incredible odds.
The four of us outside.
This statue gives tribute to the voortrekker women, who solidly supported the men, even loading their muskets during battles.
If you look closely, you can see us above the statue. The picture of us above is a close-up at the same spot.
This was the next day at the Bostwana border, where Mr. Neels discovered that he had brought an expired passport! Two people had been riding with him, but now we all had to pile into the Land Cruiser. Here, Ezra and Joe Taylor are putting some suitcases on top to make room in the back for two people to ride.
We stayed overnight in the middle of Botswana in a hotel. We went across to the restaurant there for supper.
The flowering trees there were beautiful.
One of the buildings with rooms we stayed in.

Loading up the next morning.
Candace and Amaris settling in the back of the Land Cruiser.
Mr. Neels' vehicle had broken down just blocks from his office, where he was headed to get his current passport. Rather than drive back to us like he had been planning, he just flew the next day to Windhoek, Namibia's capital. We met him at the airport, where he rented a car. Then we all drove to the other side of Windhoek, where a friend of Mr. Neels used to operate a lodge. We stayed in these vacated tent "chalets". We think this is where Amaris got bitten by that infamous spider.
I thought this signpost there was cute.
We got one of Joe Taylor's group to take a picture of all of us busily writing in our diaries while waiting for supper. (This was taken on someone else's camera.)
We had one more day of traveling, but I will have pictures of that in the next post.

Flood

Here are some pictures of some activities we did around the end of April and early May. One point of interest was the week of rain, but I'll get to that further down.
I loved this bluebird that perched in one of our trees.

Craft time at Bible Club.
On our way to Bible Club, Dad needed us to drop something off at a job. The boys spotted this deer lying down under the deck.
Playing games.
The first week in May, it rained and rained and rained! On the fourth day, our pond, which had been nearly empty, looked like this. We were so excited! Little did we know how much more rain was on the way!
This was a few days later, seen from the house. The pond overflowed, and there was water running out the other side and going into the neighbor's pasture! Everything was soaked.
Several window wells got a lot of water in them.
The rain had started Monday. Saturday morning, we discovered that the basement floor was getting wet. Dad got a little hose going to take the ground water outside, and we had to move everything off the wet carpet so we could clean up the water with a shop vac.
My room had one wet spot, so I dried it up as much as I could with a shop vac. In the girls' room, the water kept seeping in continually. Dad had two shop vacs running all the time, just sucking up the water as it came in. He and Sam took turns getting up at night to check pumps they had put in window wells to pump the water out. We were sure glad to have a dad with brains and brawn for keeping the basement dry! For once we were glad when the rain stopped!
The trail we like to walk on had this miniature canyon carved through it from all the running water.

We saw water where we never had seen it before!
When there's enough runoff, this hollow fills up. There was plenty of runoff this time!
All the rain made grass and flowers grow really well! The outdoors is just beautiful right now.

verses from Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the sea; though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling.
                                                                                                                                       Selah.
God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.
                                                                                         Selah
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.
                                                                                      Selah

Birds and Blooms

There is a magazine called Birds and Blooms, and I thought it an appropriate title for this post. I think you'll know why when you are done looking at it!
During Carrie's violin lesson, I enjoyed taking pictures of these blossoms
and of this woodpecker that showed up! We hardly ever see woodpeckers, so I was delighted!

More birds in the top of the same tree the woodpecker was in.
We are enjoying these chicks!
There are a lot of this kind of tree in town.
This was at a place where we went to get a flat tire replaced.
I love the birds around here. This is a bluebird.
The meadowlark song is one of my favorite bird songs. We hear them a lot around here, but can't always see them. I was really happy to get this shot.
In the middle of this picture is a horned lark. It was right on the trail a little ways in front of me.
Some daffodil pictures. The second one is at the church, but the rest are ours.
